The Things we do for Charity…
The things we do for charity… well this one is going to be the hardest and definitely the most enjoyable.
A group of four of us have signed up for motorbike ride starting in Hobart and finishing in…………………………. Alice Springs… Yep Alice
That’s not the hard part though, its almost all on the dirt, through creeks, through the snow and sandy deserts. A massive 3500klm’s over 9 days.
And just to make it really enjoyable… we are doing it on Postie Bikes, yes the same bikes your mail gets delivered in each day. And no Postie bike is complete without a milk crate occy strapped to the back…
The annual event is appropriately named the Postie Bike Challenge and Ken, Pil, Matty and myself, along with around 45 others, will be doing the trek in August. This is all to raise funds for Rotary Club and other charities.
The event organizer has just completed the course we are riding, so I thought I would give you a little recap of what his comments were:
Starting in Hobart we head north and not long after we are on dirt. Heading through the high country up past the Great Lakes where it will be snowing, we set camp for the first night near Cradle Mountain. Yes we are camping in the snow…
Day 2 we head further west to the most remote areas of Tasmania and then follow the coastline, on dirt, all the way back to Devonport where we catch a ferry across Bass Straight.
Day 3 we head for Norsham which we are told is a more easier day but from day 4, all the action starts
Day 4 we ride our Postie bikes along a 100klm stretch of sandy road – this will be challenging. From northern Victoria and into SA and the Flinders ranges taking in the scenic gorges (apparently)…
Now hitting the northern remote parts of SA we come across Oodnadatta and the Oodnadatta Track where the terrain is that rugged that we will only cover 600klm in three days. It looks as though we will be the only people we see for hundreds of kilometers and we are stupid enough to do it on Postie Bikes…
The last part is where we hit bitumen again and head directly north to Alice Springs where we will join the Henley on Todd (they knew I was coming) 2 day festival.
The four of us have Go Pro’s and will be filming as much of this as we can to make a mini docco but we can do much more…
So it got me thinking… how do we make this challenge more interesting and something special to somebody else… and then it hit me.
We are riding Postie Bikes from Hobart to Alice Springs, so wouldn’t it be great if we could deliver a letter to somebody on our Postie bikes to someone special?
This is where we need your help… we need to find somebody who has a friend or relative that lives in Hobart who has a friend or relative that lives in Alice Springs who may have lost contact or not spoken to their friend in a long time and will write them a letter that I will hand deliver in person.
That’s if I make it… yeh forgot to mention, not everyone finishes… there have been a few major accidents, broken bones a plenty and a fair share of un-repairable bike failures…
So please feel free to email through any suggestions. We will be covering up our milk crates for some cheap sponsorship opportunities for those wishing to donate a little to charity… $50 will get a sticker on my bike… and with any luck from some of my TV contacts, we may even get a bit of lounge room time for all at home to see…
